================ PRODUCT INFORMATION ====================

IMPORTANT NOTES ON FLEXLM 4.1
-----------------------------
Unlike Photoshop 2.5.x, which used FLEXlm 2.4 for its licensing,
Photoshop 3.0.1 uses FLEXlm 4.1. It is very important that you
follow all of the instructions in the Installation Guide
regarding licensing to ensure that you are using the FLEXlm 4.1
license daemons and utilities rather than those from FLEXlm 2.4.
(Note: FLEXlm 4.1 is upwardly compatible. Applications
that used FLEXlm 2.4, such as Photoshop 2.5.x, will work with
FLEXlm 4.1 daemons and utilities.)

It is important to have your serial number ready when you launch the
installation script named "AdobePhotoshop.requestlicense." The only way
to exit this script without your serial number is to close your UNIX shell.

INSTALLING THE 3.0.1 RELEASE
----------------------------
Instructions are provided in the Installation Guide for Easy
Installation and Custom Installation of the version 3.0.1 update.

It is not necessary to delete the older version of the application
to install the newer one. However, when using the easyinst.pho
script during an Easy Installation or the photoshop.makelinks script
after a Custom Installation, you will be prompted to replace the
launch script link to /usr/bin with a link to the newer version 3.0.1
launch script.

When you launch version 3.0.1, an AdobePhotoshop3 working directory
will be created or updated to match this new version of the software.

LAUNCHING ADOBE PHOTOSHOP
-------------------------
The following is a quick summary on how to launch Adobe Photoshop.
Before you launch Adobe Photoshop you should have obtained a valid
license (to enable full functionality) and have optimized your
environment (for best performance). For more complete information or
if you encounter errors, consult your Installation Guide.

To start Adobe Photoshop from the Indigo Magic desktop, double-click
on the Adobe Photoshop program icon (photoshop) located in the
<installdir>/Photoshop_3.0.1/bin directory (<installdir> is /usr/adobe
by default).

If the Photoshop launch script has been linked to /usr/bin/photoshop,
you can also launch Photoshop by typing into a UNIX shell window:
	% photoshop &

IMPORTANT: If you launch Photoshop from a UNIX shell, make sure you
are not logged in as root (# prompt)!

When you launch Adobe Photoshop the first time, it creates a working
directory (AdobePhotoshop3) in your home directory that contains the
standard Adobe Photoshop files. Many of the files in this
location are actually links to the Photoshop installation area.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPER KIT IS INCLUDED
----------------------------------
The Plug-in Software Developer's Kit (SDK) for Adobe Photoshop - UNIX
is distributed on the Adobe Photoshop 3.0.1 CD-ROM disk. If you are
not a software developer, you can ignore these items. They will not
be installed with the Photoshop distribution.

The SDK consists of a UNIX-specific addendum to the Macintosh
version of the SDK as well as utilities, sample source, and header
files necessary for UNIX version plug-in development. The Macintosh
Version SDK documentation (but not sample code) is also included in
this distribution. You can also obtain the complete Macintosh SDK
through a number of on-line services or through Adobe Developer
Support.

To access the SDK files, copy them from the
/CDROM/adobe/photoshop/photoshop_sdk directory to a local disk and follow
the instructions in the PI_SDK_UNIX_3.0.ps file.

NO VIDEO CAPTURE, IMPRESSARIO SCANNER AND IMPRESSARIO PRINTER PLUG-INS
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Video Capture, Impressario Scanner and Impressario Printer plug-ins
are not available with this release of Photoshop 3.0.1.

VERSIONS OF IRIX SUPPORTED INCLUDE 5.3 AND 6.2
----------------------------------------------
Photoshop has been tested and supports IRIX versions 5.3 and 6.2. IRIX 6.0
has not been tested with Photoshop and is not supported.

80 MEGABYTES MINIMUM OF SWAP SPACE REQUIRED
-------------------------------------------
You should allocate sufficient swap space on your system before
running Photoshop, otherwise, you may experience random server
or application crashes. 80 megabytes is recommended as a minimum
amount. On some systems, you will find that 80 megabytes is insufficient
and you will have to allocate more swap space. Consult the Performance
Tuning Guide found in the docs directory for information on how to
allocate swap space. For additional information on errors caused by
insufficient swap space, see section below: Program Errors.

========================= PROGRAM ERRORS ==========================

SAVE YOUR DOCS AND RESTART AFTER A PROGRAM ERROR
------------------------------------------------
Error: Could not complete your request because of a program error.

If you receive a program error while running Adobe Photoshop, it is
recommended that you immediately save all your documents and exit the
application. Continuing to work with the program while your environment
is in this state may cause unpredictable results.

ERROR IF NOT ENOUGH SWAP SPACE
------------------------------
Error: Could not complete operation - not enough swap.

There is a danger of X server instability if swap space gets too low.
Since the X server does not gracefully handle memory allocation
failure (caused by being out of swap space), it may not indicate that
the swap is getting low.

As a precaution, Photoshop checks how much swap space is free
whenever an operation is performed that would cause X server memory
to be allocated. This includes opening windows and zooming. If
less than 10MB is available, Photoshop prevents the operation from
continuing and brings up the warning dialog:
Warning: You do not have sufficient physical swap space.

Solution:
If you receive this error, you should add additional swap space before
continuing (see the Installation Guide). If you cannot add additional
swap space, it is highly recommended that you save your open documents
and quit the application.

NOTE: If warning is ignored Photoshop may enter loop state where message
is generated immediately after dismissal, making save impossible. It is
therefore recommended that user immediately save changes and remedy the
situation. In extreme circumstances Photoshop as a consequence of no
available swap will crash, in which case either a console or system
message will report the event.

ERROR IF SCRATCH DISK VOLUME IS UNMOUNTED
-----------------------------------------
Error: Could not complete your request because of a disk error.

The volume where the primary scratch disk is located has been unmounted.
Remount the volume that has the primary scratch disk.

ERROR IF SCRATCH DISK IS SET TO AN UNWRITABLE VOLUME
----------------------------------------------------
Error: Could not initialize Photoshop because you do not have
the necessary access privileges.

The primary scratch disk has been set to a volume to which you do not have
write permission.

To re-enable Photoshop, delete the Photoshop preferences from the
~/AdobePhotoshop3/Preferences directory and restart Photoshop. This
will delete the reference to the unwritable scratch disk but will
also revert all your preferences to their defaults.

================== PHOTOSHOP ISSUES =====================

PHOTOSHOP NOT SAVED BY SESSION MANAGEMENT
-----------------------------------------
Adobe Photoshop will not be saved by the Indigo Magic session management.
If you log out of your account while Photoshop is running, it will not
relaunch the application when you log back in. To obtain this functionality,
you will need to modify the .sgisession file in your home directory.

Add the following line to your .sgisession file:
	/usr/bin/photoshop
or <installdir>/Photoshop_3.0.1/bin/photoshop
(<installdir> is /usr/adobe by default)

If you do not have a .sgisession file in your home directory, you will
need to create one with Jot or another text editor.

APPLICATION IS NOT CASE SENSITIVE
---------------------------------
Adobe Photoshop cannot distinguish between two file names
in the same directory that differ only by lower/upper case.
For example, file Image.psd and image.psd appear to have the same name.

MOVING LAYERS USING ARROW KEYS
------------------------------
You should use only dedicated Arrow or Shift-Arrow keys to move a
layer 1 or 10 pixels. Do not use the arrow keys in the numeric
keypad to move a layer. If you do, you will find that the layer does
not move, but the transparency of the layer changes.

MOVING SELECTIONS IN THE SCRATCH PALETTE WITH ARROW KEYS
--------------------------------------------------------
You should move all selections in the scratch palette by using
the Move Tool, not by using the arrow keys. Using the arrow keys
will move the image, not the scratch selection.

FONT AND TYPE TOOL ISSUES
--------------------------
- Warnings When Selecting Font Within Document Window:
When selecting a font within a document window, you may experience
a dialog that warns of a damaged outline file for your selected font.
This is due to an incomplete font installation, i.e.,
the /usr/lib/DPS/outline/base may not include the outlines for the fonts
in the /usr/lib/DPS/DPSFonts.upr file.
This can be averted by creating a new DPSFonts.upr file using
the /usr/bin/X11/makepsres command.
Follow these steps:

1. Be sure that you are root
2. type: /usr/bin/mv /usr/lib/DPS/DPSFonts.upr /usr/lib/DPS/DPSFonts.upr.org
3. type: /usr/adobe/Photoshop_3.0.1/bin/makepsres -nb -o
/usr/lib/DPS/DPSFonts.upr /usr/lib/DPS/AFM /usr/lib/DPS/outline
4. type: chmod 644 /usr/lib/DPS/DPSFonts.upr

- Limitations in Cutting and Pasting Within Font Dialog Box:
The Font dialog box that comes up when you use the Type Tool only allows
you to cut and paste using "hot keys": Meta-C for cut and Meta-V for paste.
You can only cut and paste text within this dialog box using these keys.

- Flashing of Highlighted Text in Type Tool Dialog Box:
If you highlight text from the text entry area of the Type Tool dialog
and let up the mouse outside of the text entry area, the highlight
might flash off and on. To stop the flashing, click in the text entry
area.

FUNCTION KEY ISSUES
-------------------
- Assigning Mode Conversions to Function Keys:
If you want to assign mode conversions (Grayscale, RGB Color,
CYMK Color, or Lab Color) to a function key, it is recommended
that you specify it as its assigned mode (Mode:Grayscale for
example). It is best to actually choose the command from the
menubar to enter it into the Function Key preference dialog
instead of typing it in.

- Assigning Function Key to New Window Command:
Be cautioned that if you assign a function key to the New Window
command, do not hold down that function key but rather quickly
press and release. If you hold down the key and allow autorepeat
action to occur on the key, hundreds of new windows will be
created and it will be a while before Photoshop is usable again.
It is also possible that the window manager or X-server may crash
or hang because it cannot handle so many open windows.

OTHER KEYBOARD ISSUES
---------------------
- Changing Keyboard Preferences from Photoshop 2.5.x:
To change the keyboard preferences in Photoshop 2.5.x, you were
required to copy a file named "photoshop.mackeys" from the app-defaults
subdirectory within the Photoshop install directory into your home
directory. This is no longer required because the keyboard can now be
changed in the preferences menu. If you have a file named Photoshop
in your home directory from a previous version of Photoshop, remove
the lines referring to shiftPrefix, shiftKey, controlPrefix, controlKey,
commandPrefix, commandKey, optionPrefix, optionKey, lockPrefix and
lockKey. This will eliminate confusion with the new keyboard mapping
configuration.

- Keyboard Commands that Conflict with Window Manager Commands
Require Use of Shift Key as Modifier:
Any Photoshop keyboard commands that conflict with Window Manager
commands may require the Shift key to be used in addition to the
standard modifier for execution. Alternatively, you can turn off the
keyboard command for the Window Manager. For example, for the
Window Manager, Alt/Space brings up a window menu. This conflicts
with the MKEY1/Space (Zoom In) or MKEY2/Space (Zoom Out) functionality
in UNIX Photoshop. To disable the Alt/Space feature in Indigo Magic,
copy file /usr/lib/X11/system.4Dwmrc to ~/.4Dwmrc and then hand-edit the
file to put an "!" in front of the line labeled "Alt<Key>space" within
the "Key 4DwmKeyBindings" section of the file. (Consult system
documentation for further details.)

- Use Dedicated Arrow Keys, Not Numeric Keypad Arrow Keys:
The arrow keys on the numeric keypad do not work as arrow keys,
even if Num Lock is off. Use the dedicated arrow keys on the keyboard
instead. Please see the "Adobe Photoshop 3.0.1 Installation Guide" for
further details on this issue.

- Some "Hot Keys" Don't Work as Keyboard Shortcuts:
In some cases,"hot keys", the underlined first letter of a word that acts
as a keyboard shortcut for answering a dialog box button, do not work. An
example of a hot key is the letter "c" for cancel that comes up in most
dialog boxes.

ISSUES RELATED TO 8-BIT MACHINES
--------------------------------
The following problems occur with 8-bit machines:

- Incorrect Color Display:
Photoshop may display colors incorrectly when the user is running
other applications that have affected the system color map. Restart
the window manager and do not run these other applications at the
same time as Photoshop.

- Redrawing of Curves May Leave Artifacts:
If you use the Image->Adjust->Curves command from the menubar
and then use the pencil tool within that dialog, the previous curve
will not erase as you draw the new curve. To remove the previous
curve, use the window manager to force a redraw of the dialog or
click the Smooth button.

- Changes in Highlights When Changing Mode from RGB to Grayscale:
On some systems highlights in dialogs may change from blue to gray when
changing mode between RGB and Grayscale.
This also effects thumbnail previews in certain dialog boxes.

- Diffusion Dither under General Preferences Does Not Produce Expected Results:
Selecting Diffusion Dither under General Preferences on 8-bit systems may
result in incorrect color mapping.
On 24-bit systems, Diffusion Dither is not functional.

UNNECESSARY REDRAWS WITH EXPLICIT (i.e., CLICK-TO-TYPE) FOCUS
-------------------------------------------------------------
Intermittently, Photoshop has trouble determining whether you are
using explicit (i.e., click-to-type) or pointer focus to determine
which window is receiving keyboard input, and the result is that
you might observe unnecessary screen redraws. A workaround in some
situations is to create a Photoshop file in your home directory
and include the following lines in the file:

! The activateDelay resource may be used whenever the Window Manager resource
! keyboardFocusPolicy is set to "pointer". This resource is the number of
! milliseconds that a window must retain the focus before it is activated
! by the application.
! Because I have my keyboardFocusPolicy set to "explicit", I am forcing
! Photoshop's activateDelay to 0 to eliminate unnecessary redraws.
*activateDelay: 0

TEMP FILES MAY REMAIN AFTER CRASH OR KILL OF PHOTOSHOP
------------------------------------------------------
If Photoshop crashes or is killed for any reason, it will not
remove temp files created in your user directory, which it
will do during the normal quit process. If you have killed
the Photoshop process or have experienced a crash, you will
need to delete the temp file from your
<workingdir>/.system/System/Temporary Items directory.

SCRATCH DISK SPACE NOT RELEASED UNTIL QUIT
------------------------------------------
As Photoshop is used, scratch disk space used and held by
Photoshop files will keep accumulating, even if these files
are closed. Photoshop will not free up scratch disk space
again until the program is quit.

PROBLEMS TRANSFERRING FILES FROM MACINTOSHES TO UNIX
----------------------------------------------------
There are scenarios where Mac-to-UNIX file transfer programs can
be tricked into corrupting data files when transferring files
from a Macintosh to a UNIX system, causing UNIX versions of
Photoshop to either not load the file at all or display corrupted
contents.

The main source of the problem is when the file type on the
Macintosh (seen via Get Info) is TEXT, whereas the file is actually
image data (e.g., Photoshop file format or JPEG or TIFF). If the
Mac-to-UNIX file transfer program believes a file contains text
only, then it will substitute all occurrences of hex code 0xd with
0xa upon transferring the file to UNIX.

There are many workarounds, including using binary mode ftp
to transfer the file or to change the Macintosh file type
to something other than TEXT.

MAXIMIZE BUTTON MAKES DOCUMENT WINDOWS TOO TALL
-----------------------------------------------
The Indigo Magic maximize button on the top right of the border for
document windows will cause Photoshop windows to grow larger than
the screen, making it difficult to view the very bottom of
document windows. The workaround is to use the window mode
icons at the bottom of the toolbar instead of the maximize button.

PHOTOSHOP LOSES SHARED MEMORY BLOCKS ON CRASHES
-----------------------------------------------
If Photoshop 3.0.1 experiences crashes or is killed without being able
to go through its normal cleanup, an unused shared memory block
might be left allocated. The leftover shared memory block will usually
get reused when Photoshop 3.0.1 is restarted and then will be freed
upon normal exit from Photoshop. However, if you have multiple
versions of Photoshop running at once on the same machine and
multiple versions crash, only one of the shared memory blocks
may get reused. To check for currently allocated shared memory blocks,
use the command "ipcs -m". To remove shared memory blocks, you can
reboot or you can use the command "ipcrm -m <id>". Be sure not to
remove shared memory blocks that are owned by root.

RELIABILITY PROBLEMS WITH NETWORK SCRATCH FILES
-----------------------------------------------
NFS has some limitations that can become very apparent if you put your
Photoshop scratch files on an NFS volume. It is highly recommended that
you use local disks for your scratch files rather than NFS volumes for
both reliability and performance reasons.

AVOID HAVING BOTH ATTACHED AND FLOATING MENUBARS
------------------------------------------------
If you have both attached and floating menubars (this instance is
only possible by altering your .Xdefaults file outside of Photoshop),
the tool palette might become unusable. Therefore, use either
attached menubars (the default) or floating, but not both.

SAVING LARGE EPS FILES ABOVE 65 MB
----------------------------------
When saving a large EPS file above 65 MB, canceling the "Writing Preview"
dialog box will allow you to save a non-corrupted file.

KILLING PHOTOSHOP WHILE ACQUIRING A LARGE EPS FILE MAY CAUSE DESKTOP HANG
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is best not to attempt to kill Photoshop from a UNIX shell while
acquiring a large (approx. 100 MB or larger) EPS file. If you decide to kill
Photoshop using the "kill -9 <"Ado*" process id number>" command, while
acquiring an EPS file, your desktop may hang or exhibit bizarre behavior.

SETTING PHOTOSHOP_ROOT ENVIRONMENT VARIABLE
-------------------------------------------
When setting the PHOTOSHOP_ROOT environment variable you must include the
entire working directory in the path, for example, "setenv PHOTOSHOP_ROOT
<workingdir>". Not specifying the absolute path to the working directory
may cause the tutorial directory to not load.

CHANNEL MASK CORRUPTS COLOR OF LAYER SELECTION IN LAYERS PALETTE
----------------------------------------------------------------
In the Layers Palette, the chosen layer turns dark gray instead of
light. As long as there is a Channel Mask, any chosen layer will show
dark in the Layers Palette.
WORKAROUND: Turning off the Channel Mask or deselecting it in
the Channels Palette restores the correct color to the Layers Palette.

================ PRODUCT LIMITATIONS =====================

THE CD-ROM MAY NOT BE ACCESSIBLE OUTSIDE OF PHOTOSHOP
-----------------------------------------------------
If you add a CD-ROM to your "Hotlist" Directory list (see Using the
Open File Dialog Box in the Installation Guide), the CD-ROM
contents may not be accessible from other applications while
Photoshop is running. Quitting Photoshop will make them available.

NO INTER-APPLICATION COMMUNICATION WITH EXPORT CLIPBOARD
------------------------------------------------------------
Photoshop is able to share clipboard contents to some extent
with other applications as long as Photoshop is still active.
While it is running, Photoshop uses the standard X/Motif
clipboard to share data with other applications.

By contrast, the Export Clipboard feature tells Photoshop to
also save its clipboard to a file. Because no applications to
date other than Photoshop itself can locate and recognize this
saved clipboard file, the Export Clipboard option in the Photoshop
General Preferences has been disabled for SGI. Toggling the button
will have no effect on the product.

INCOMPATIBILITY WITH XCLIPBOARD PROGRAM
---------------------------------------
Because Photoshop writes to the clipboard in a format that the
xclipboard program does not recognize, using both products
simultaneously may cause errors; it is recommended that use of the
xclipboard be confined to operations outside of Photoshop.

PICT FILE FORMAT RESTRICTIONS
-----------------------------
Photoshop has some trouble acquiring or opening object-based PICT files.
In extreme cases a program crash or data corruption may result. It
is therefore recommended that the PICT file format be used judiciously
and with extreme caution.

Clicking on the Preview button in the Acquire PICT Resource dialog may
crash Photoshop.

VIDEO LUT ANIMATION FEATURE REQUIRES ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE
--------------------------------------------------------
The Video LUT (Lookup Table) feature in Adobe Photoshop is inoperable
in all known configurations because there are no drivers/plug-ins
available to support this feature.

FILE SIZE LIMITATIONS
---------------------
Photoshop cannot edit files larger than 2 gigabytes. Photoshop has a
30,000-pixel limit on all file types created from Photoshop 3.x.

FILE NAMING CONSTRAINTS
-----------------------
In Photoshop 3.x there is a 31 character filename limit.

========= CONFIGURATION AND PERFORMANCE ISSUES ===========

MULTIPLE VERSIONS OF DPS/NX MAY BE INSTALLED
--------------------------------------------
Adobe Photoshop 3.0.1 includes Display PostScript NX version 2.1.1.
Other Adobe software products (e.g., Adobe Illustrator 5.5 and Type On
Call 4.1.1) include an older version 2.1.

Version 2.1.1 is only differentiated from version 2.1 by a fix
for an obscure Acrobat-related bug.

Installing a product such as Adobe Illustrator 5.5 and Adobe Photoshop
3.0.1 will result in both versions of DPS/NX being installed on your
system. If you have both versions DPSNXBasic_2.1 and DPSNXBasic_2.1.1
installed in your installation directory (/usr/adobe/by default),
remove the older version by deleting the DPSNXBasic_2.1 directory.

If you installed Adobe Illustrator 5.5 after Adobe Photoshop 3.0.1,
you will also need to update the symbolic link /usr/bin/dpsnx.agent
to the 2.1.1 version since the 2.1 installation will have
overwritten it. To do this, as root, if there is a makelinks script in
the DPSNXBasic_2.1.1/installscripts directory, run this script.
If there is not an installscripts directory or it does not contain a
makelinks script, then, as root, you will have to manually create the
link as follows:
	rm /usr/bin/dpsnx.agent
	ln -s /usr/adobe/DPSNXBasic_2.1.1/bin/dpsnx.agent
Failure to make the symbolic link may prevent certain parts of
Adobe Photoshop from operating properly (e.g., the text tool and the
Acquire_EPS plug-in).

PRINT SPOOL ISSUES
------------------
When the print command is issued from Photoshop, it writes out the
print file into the ~/AdobePhotoshop3/.system/System/Temporary
Items directory. It then issues an lpr or lp command, which will
copy the file to the printer spooling directories (usually in the
/var/spool/lp area) and the file will print from there. It is
important that you have sufficient disk space for all these copies
when printing large files.

If Photoshop is aborted from a UNIX shell window (e.g., Ctl-C)
while it is in the process of printing, a temporary PostScript file
may be left behind in the Temporary Items directory and will need to
be manually deleted to free up disk space.

INSTALLING NET ACCOUNT AS ROOT OVER NFS
---------------------------------------
If you install Photoshop on a network directory as root, NFS gives
login "root" LESS permission over an NFS mount than it gives to
normal users. One of the consequences of this is that it cannot
preserve root-ownership of files created by root onto the network
volume. Instead, it sets the ownership to "nobody" (which corresponds
to the user-id of a negative value).

USING A DEDICATED SWAP DISK
---------------------------
Setting up your environment so that the UNIX swap area and Photoshop
scratch disk are on separate drives may improve performance. See the
Installation Guide and Performance Tuning Guide for information on
Photoshop and Memory Use.
