Using the Documentation for Jaleo Software

Welcome to the Documentation for the Jaleo Software Products.

All documentation for these products can be obtained in electronic form, and
can be viewed and printed from a database of .pdf files.
For people not accustomed to .pdf files: pdf is an abbreviation for Portable
Document Format, an Adobe invention for cross-platform file exchange,
viewing and printing.

After installing your Jaleo software, the Toolchest on the desktop of your
SGI workstation will show a new item, called 'JALEO DOCS'.
This Toolchest entry will give you access to all Jaleo Software documen-
tation, provided the Acrobat Reader software is installed on your workstation.
To check if this is so, type in the command 'versions -nb', and check for a
line in the generated output containing 'Adobe Acrobat Reader, 2.1' (or later
version, like 3.0). Also, you could check for the existence of the file
/usr/bin/acroread, or check through the Software Manager Application that
is part of your System Software (Toolchest -> System -> Software Manager).
All methods can give you information on the availability of the Acrobat
Reader application on your workstation.
Standard IRIX 6.2/6.3/6.4 installations will by default provide you with the
required functionality; otherwise, proceed to install through the Software
Manager tool.

Please take a few minutes from your precious time to explore the Documen-
tation's possibilities.

Starting.
Opening a document through choosing from the 'JALEO DOCS' items will
create an Acrobat Reader window, showing the requested information.

How to search:
Opening a TOC (Table Of Contents) or Index file will give you the possibility
of hot-linking into the chapter or paragraph of the main body of text by
clicking the desired chapter, paragraph, subparagraph or index entry. Just
click the hand-finger shaped cursor at the desired topic, and it will take
you there, opening a new Acrobat Reader window to show the desired
information.
* With the (normal) hand shaped cursor you can scroll through a page of
information; page-up and page-down will operate as expected.
In the main body text you will also find hot-links on various places, as
indicated by the litlle hand shaped cursor changing to a hand-finger shaped
cursor. Clicking on these spots will open a new window displaying the
requested information.
You can also find your way through these texts by switching to the
'bookmarks and pages' mode (Ctrl+7) of the Acrobat Reader, and clicking
through the bookmarks in the left window pane. To obtain a reasonable view
of the bookmarks, use the supplied file .acrorc (put it in the home-
directory of the Jaleo account), or change the parameter DefaultSplitterPos
(in the configuration file .acrorc, also to be found in the homedirectory of
the Jaleo account) to 350.

So, navigating through this documentation with the help of the Adobe Acrobat
Reader can be done in various ways, that is: through one of the Tables Of
Contents, through one of the Indexes, and, not mentioned yet, by searching
on keywords - just type Ctrl+F or click the binocular tool, and type in the
desired search term.
Any information you find valuable can be printed straight from the Acrobat
Reader application.

If you do not know what file you are looking at, type in Ctrl+D; this will
supply you with the Document Information on the file in the currently active
Acrobat Reader window.

Known problems:
* please disregard any references to the RotoPaint application in the Jaleo
2.5 documentation; as this application is replaced by a Plug In module in
the Jaleo 2.6 version software, this information is superseded by the infor-
mation in the version 2.6 manual.
* some index topics can only be hot-linked into by clicking on their
respective page numbers, not by clicking on the topic description itself.
* filenames of the source .pdf files are akward and do not easily give
information on the active file; this problem gave rise to hard-linking these
files to more informative names. Normally, you will not encounter this
problem, as you will access these files through the Toolchest tool.

This help file is distributed both in .pdf and in ASCII format.
