Exercise 6: SUCKING THE PARTICLES DOWN A SINK HOLE

a lovely plughole

decreasing swirling
to emphasise the suction

  1. set up a simple particle system
    • some gravity
    • a little friction
    • turbulence building up
  2. restart the particle system
  3. and play through so you are happy with the way the particles fall

If you are not sure what settings to use, go back to the swirling demos and use the last example.

  4. now activate the sink hole
  5. keep the sink hole center in the middle
  6. set the Outer Radius to 24.0
  7. set Sink Strength to 160.0
  8. set Sink Swirl to 30.0
  9. set Friction to 25.0
  10. if you have the the base setting from the last turbulence demo your particles should swirl down the plug hole.
    • if they fly off the side of the plug hole, increase the friction
    • if they fall too quickly into the center of the plug hole, reduce the friction
    • reduce the swirl amplitude to emphasise the suction
    • the effect of friction is relative to the Sink Strength and the Sink Swirl (also considering Gravity and Velocity!)
Hint: The Sink Strength may need to be 3 times greater than the Sink Swirl.

REMEMBER: Disable the sink effect by setting the strength to 0.0.
