Introduction

Images created with a computer graphics system are stored in an image format. Some computer graphic systems store their images in their own specific formats, while others use a generic format. To export an image from one computer graphics system to another, the image usually has to be converted. GIG's graphical Converter makes it possible to convert images to and from different image formats. GIG's Converter can be selected from the tools menu by double clicking on Converter or started up from a UNIX shell with the command `startConverter'.

Rendered images
Images rendered with 3D-GO version 2.4 and later will be stored using the Tiff file format. The image names have the extension .tif. Images rendered with the GIG render window command are stored in the intdump directory. Images rendered as a still or animation are stored in the production directory. Images used by GIG for mapping are stored in a Tiff tiled format, in the intmap directory.

The Graphical Interface

GIG's file Converter consists of four parts. The left side contains source related subjects and the right side contains destination related subjects. The top side of the menu is divided into six parts and contains default conversion buttons. The first two define the source from which the files will be taken, the middle two define the operation on the selected files, and the last two parts define the destination into which the selected files will stored. The bottom side finally is reserved for user defined conversion. This part is the graphical representation of the command line utility gig_conv.
